An Interview with Rich Humann – President and CEO of H2M Architects & Engineers
Engineers Tell us how you started.
H2M was founded in 1933 as a modest civil engineering and land surveying practice. The nascent Grumman Aviation was our primary client. The company’s capabilities have since grown to include full professional services in architecture, engineering, environmental sciences, and construction administration.
What was a turning point for you/your organization?
One recent turning point for the company was the restructuring of H2M’s business model in 2010-2011. During this time, we conducted a top to bottom review of our service lines and customer base. The result was the development of a market sector approach to lead sales and business development efforts. This allowed H2M to offer its full complement of technical services to clients in a particular market. For instance, a higher education client who hired H2M for architectural design would now be offered other services, including environmental and civil engineering. This innovative achievement supported H2M’s business through the recent economic downturn and positioned the firm for future growth.
What is your philosophy at H2M?
Since our early roots, our focus has remained steadfast: to provide quality service with sound judgment and to serve as an honest professional resource to our clients. With a dedicated, responsive staff and multiple service offerings under one roof, we blend “can-do” with “can-be,” developing real, workable solutions with a dose of innovation. Our diverse in-house expertise reduces the need for sub-consultants and ensures that our architects and engineers develop a comprehensive understanding of every project. With in-house MEP engineering and structural teams, we’re able to take a holistic approach to project design that combines a practical approach with creative results.
Tell us about your company’s profile today.
Today, H2M is a multi-disciplined professional consulting and design firm. Our services include architecture; engineering (civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, environmental); planning; survey; GIS/mapping; sustainable design; water supply resources; wastewater management; construction inspection; and corrosion consulting services. Our staff consists of over 260 professionals, with office locations in Melville, NY, Riverhead, NY, New City, NY, Albany, NY, White Plains, NY, Parsippany, NJ, and Howell, NJ.
What opportunities do you see in the future?
Serving diverse markets across the NY/NJ metropolitan area, there are numerous opportunities for growth for H2M. Since 2008 and the market downturn, real estate development has been slow in the region. We see this as a growth market as capital is loosened up and demand for products and services increases. Public entities such as school districts, fire and ambulance companies, municipalities and state/ federal agencies are also starting to increase spending on architecture and engineering services after a slowdown in these markets. Infrastructure projects such as water resources, wastewater, and transportation also have great opportunities for expansion on Long Island, NYC, and the surrounding area.
